Editorial decisions are recorded in structured workflow states so authors, editors, and administrators have a clear view of manuscript status and next actions.
Accept, revise, reject
Editors typically choose among acceptance, revisions required, or rejection. Revision decisions may cover minor or major changes depending on the extent of issues raised during review and editorial assessment. Decision notes should explain the main basis for the outcome and what authors need to do next.
Needs decision and production states
Internal workflow states such as Needs Decision or In Production are operational stages used to route manuscripts between editorial handling, author revision, APC processing, galley preparation, and publication. These states keep notification timing and editorial responsibilities aligned with the current stage.
Consistency and documentation
Editors should document reasons clearly enough that authors understand the outcome and admins can audit workflow history. Strong decision records reduce disputes and support appeals handling where needed. Where a manuscript is close to scope but not suitable for acceptance, the decision note should explain the limiting factors concretely.
